The Dresden Files – Harry’s Staff
July 20, 2026
The staff of the infamous Harry Dresden, wizard and private investigator from the Dresden Files.
Development
As a fan of the Dresden Files novels, it was quite a surprise to receive a client request to actually recreate something from the books. Fortunately, the client already had some ideas on how they wanted the staff to look, and so from their concept sketches this staff was born!
Before this project, I'd already had some practise in recreating realistic wood-grain effects via the Deathslinger Harpoon project, and so this became a logical extension of those same basic principles.
The difficulty for this project was that there are inherant complications in 3D printing and assembling large-scale items, due to the restrictions in the printable size of object on a 3D printer. This was further complicated by the need for this item to be shipped internationally, and therefor had to be shipped disassembled in order to fit into a shipping package that would survive the journey.
All in all, I'm proud of how it all turned out. The wood effect here looked extremely good in person, and the animated lighting effects really makes this prop pop! It made for an excellent and eye-catching piece.
